Comments on Game vs. DiamondJaxx September 21

Thought I'd summarize my thoughts on the game this Sunday. Here's how I break it down:

The Diamondjaxx were the best opponent we've had all year. But we were clearly their equal. We were close to getting 3 outs on them in two innings. We made some great infield stops to keep them from advancing and some fantastic outfield stops and throws to stop potential runs. Some really good hitting on our part as well. I was impressed with several hard hit balls by our boys.

Overall, the D-Jaxx were a good opponent and I expect to see them again come postseason. I think our boys responded well to the game and I know they loved the cheers from the crowd. I think we have the most enthusiastic crowd in the league. I stayed around for the game after ours and they are definitely not as supportive. So, what a fun game and what great support for our Rattler Nation.

Hitting-Overall, good effort by each boy. I think every hitter has advanced his swing each game. We will be working on rotating the hips through the ball and on getting a strong grip on the bat. When you work with them at home, have them swing without a bat and focus on turning their hips first and then letting the hands follow. Also, we need to focus on not getting the elbows quite so high. The back elbow should be level and extended. When the swing occurs, the elbow should drop no further than even with the side of the body. The back should not swing any further. Some of the boys are pushing their elbow so that their hand is turning under the ball and "handcuffing" their swing. You can see it in some of the pictures Jeff Koke distributed last week. So, our work is going to be on driving the hips through the ball, getting the elbow in position, and keeping the hands level and the elbow from extending too far forward.

Base Running- I think every boy made it on base. That's great! So, now we need to work on being agressive when we get on base. We'll be working on watching the coaches and hustling to first after the hit. The boys have a tendency to watch the hit, instead of sprinting to 1st. We've been working on this in a drill we did before the game and in practice.

Throwing- The position I would like to see their arm is similar to an L. Not a shotput. Not a slingshot. Not a catapult. So, work with your son on getting that L. Also, they need to work on using their back foot as leverage to throw as they step forward. It's so important that we develop this skill in making solid, accurate throws.

Catching- Many times during the game, we had pop flies that were catchable. We will continue working with them on moving their feet and their glove. We'll work on glove position and feet positioning this week.

Grounders-Overall, a good job here. We had some great stops in the infield and outfield. I remember two or three hard hit balls that were cleanly played in both the infield and outfield. We want the boys to use their knees to get in position, and not kneeling on one knee.

Dugout-I'd like to see better transitions from the dugout to the field. Talk to your son about listening and getting their glove and hat in one place when they get in and out of the dugout. They're boys so it's going to be chaotic, but we can always make it smoother.

So, let's get ready for this week! See you all Thursday

Practice for September 11

I thought I would post our practice schedule for September 11. We need all the help we can get and we will be emphasizing specific things at each station. Try to be on time by 5:30 so we can utilize all the time we have on the field! So, here goes:

PRACTICE FOR SEPTEMBER 11

Base running- 5 minutes

STATION: HITTING
Emphasize:
-turning hips
-elbow out
-getting measured from the ball
-not standing ahead of the t, but getting feet behind the t
-not lunging
-not stepping forward with weight on front foot, but keeping on the back foot
STATION: INFIELD POSITIONS AND THROWING TO FIRST
-work on getting baseball position- feet slightly more than shoulder width
-hands open and close to knees
-knees bent
-work on charging the ball on slow grounders, grabbing the ball with bare hand
-work on making GOOD and CATCHABLE throws to first base.
-work on 1st baseman keeping his foot on the bag and extending out to catch the ball

STATION: POP FLIES
-keeping glove extended from body
-using feet to get in position
-not being afraid of the ball
-not swatting at the ball with the glove

STATION: GROUNDERS/CATCH AND THROW
-work on staying down and getting in front of the ball
-work on avoiding the “OLE” position
-letting the ball hit the chest and knocking the ball down
-working on coming up and making a good and catchable throw
-working on glove and feet positioning
-WORK on getting the arm in an L position when throwing
-Stepping towards the target when throwing

STATION FOR THE NEW KIDS: INSTEAD OF POP FLIES JUST WORKING ON GETTING THE GLOVE IN THE RIGHT POSITION
- I thought we would put this station in for the new kids just to get them adjusted to the workout and to spend more time with them on how to hold the glove

First Game Thoughts vs. Knights

Congratulations Timber Rattlers on a great first game. As I said after the game, it took us 6 games last Spring to get one out and we got over 6 outs in our first game!

Here's my thoughts on the overall game.

1. The boys had a great time. We were cut short 1 1/2 innings and that limited our ability to fully rotate positions and go through the batting order more than a couple of times. The first game takes a little longer for the teams to get to the field, get up to the plate, and learn to imitate pitching.

2. I was so impressed with how well the boys listened and moved to their respective positions. Even the new first time players were getting in the rhythm quickly.

3. Hitting- nice job all the way around. Every boy connected with the ball and we even had some big home run hitters! Nice. I want to work on connecting with the ball using more hip motion and powering through the ball.

4. Catching- Overall, I was pleased. I do want to work very hard on catching the ball in the air, both in terms of fly balls and in terms of throwing to first.

5. Throwing- We did pretty good here as well. I would like to see more work on this Thursday in terms of accurately attempting to throw a ball to someone that can be caught for an out. We almost had two double plays by the way!!

6. Things to work on at practice:
a. more powerful hitting through the ball.
b. throwing the ball so it can be caught by a teammate.
c. pop flies.
d. fielding and knocking down ground balls.
e. learning more about each position (pitcher, catcher, etc) and what each position does with the ball.

7. Hustle- yes, we definitely had this.

8. Thanks for being on time. It's very important that we show up at least 15 minutes before the game. We take the field quickly so thanks for being on time and please be ready next Sunday!

So, nice first game and see you all Thursday at the Shetland field.

Timber Rattler Schedule for Fall

Timber Rattlers! The schedule has been released and our first game is:

Sunday, September 7, at 2:15 vs. Knights. See you at the Shetland Field. We are playing the fearless Knights. Good night Knights!!

September 14- 4:45 Shetland Field vs. Bats. Not Batman, just the little flying mammals called the Bats. Timber Rattlers eat bats for breakfast (alright maybe we don't, but we might eat them for lunch or a snack between meals).

September 21-1:00 Shetland Field vs. Diamond Jaxx. Well, we can already spell better than them, and 4 out of 5 dentists translate that into better baseball!! Kidding, I'm kidding.

Welcome Mighty Timber Rattlers!

This is Coach David and it's time to get rockin' this Fall. We should have a great time throughout the season, as the boys develop their skills. We will have a schedule sometime early next week and our first game will be the weekend of September 6-7.

Also, we will have the shirts and hats at practice on Thursday. We are going to go with gray pants. I'll have more color coordination updates on socks in the near future.

Let's all work together and give our boys the opportunity to enjoy being on a team. Go Timber Rattlers!
