Congratulations Timber Rattlers on a great first game. As I said after the game, it took us 6 games last Spring to get one out and we got over 6 outs in our first game!
Here's my thoughts on the overall game.
1. The boys had a great time. We were cut short 1 1/2 innings and that limited our ability to fully rotate positions and go through the batting order more than a couple of times. The first game takes a little longer for the teams to get to the field, get up to the plate, and learn to imitate pitching.
2. I was so impressed with how well the boys listened and moved to their respective positions. Even the new first time players were getting in the rhythm quickly.
3. Hitting- nice job all the way around. Every boy connected with the ball and we even had some big home run hitters! Nice. I want to work on connecting with the ball using more hip motion and powering through the ball.
4. Catching- Overall, I was pleased. I do want to work very hard on catching the ball in the air, both in terms of fly balls and in terms of throwing to first.
5. Throwing- We did pretty good here as well. I would like to see more work on this Thursday in terms of accurately attempting to throw a ball to someone that can be caught for an out. We almost had two double plays by the way!!
6. Things to work on at practice:
a. more powerful hitting through the ball.
b. throwing the ball so it can be caught by a teammate.
c. pop flies.
d. fielding and knocking down ground balls.
e. learning more about each position (pitcher, catcher, etc) and what each position does with the ball.
7. Hustle- yes, we definitely had this.
8. Thanks for being on time. It's very important that we show up at least 15 minutes before the game. We take the field quickly so thanks for being on time and please be ready next Sunday!
So, nice first game and see you all Thursday at the Shetland field.
